I write this blog to bring awareness to the fact that America has not healed from the long divisive history that is racism. Too many people want to look away from the ugliness that is racism, and pretend that once we went through the civil uprising in the 1960's that we were done with this topic. There is a tendency to point to people of color who have done well in this country. Sports heroes, politicians, leaders in business, movie actors and actresses who have made it big in the movies. But there are still far too many who have not had opportunities, because there are still people in the news whose hatred for people of color comes out in ugly and reprehensible ways. To wit:
A supporter of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was spotted wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the words "Put the white back in the White House" at a campaign event this week.
Additionally, this was posted this week, also in the Huff Post Politics:
.....last month, an Obama supporter in Texas said her Obama/Biden yard sign had been vandalized with the words "N*GGER LOVER -- Obama Sucks D*ck!" She went on to say that there were African American families who lived on her street, and she was offended both for herself and those families.
There is a saying frequently heard in support groups, "This too shall pass". I just have to ask....when will the hatred and the divisiveness in this country begin to pass? When will it be ok to just live and work together in communities where no one is judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character, as MLK, Jr. once dreamed in the 1960's?
My children are all in their 30's, and two are considering having children of their own. Will this come to pass by the time my children have children? By the time my grandchildren have children? When will this country begin to heal, to be less divided? When will the hate-mongers begin to see all of humanity, as....well, all of humanity?
